Maersk sails first US 100% ethanol bunkering as biofuel groups push to open RFS to marine fuel
A Maersk boxship, the Tangier Maersk, left Houston for New York running on 100 percent bioethanol, the first US ethanol marine bunkering on record. WinGD supplied the engine side of the first. For anyone moving ethanol, that is a new demand outlet opening up, and it landed the same week biofuel groups started pushing Washington to let marine fuel count under the Renewable Fuel Standard.
The American Bioenergy Council applauded a call to expand RFS eligibility to marine fuels. Read that straight. If shipping can generate RINs, ethanol and biodiesel pick up a buyer that barely existed before, and the gallons go somewhere other than the E10 blend wall that has capped domestic corn ethanol for years. One voyage proves nothing on volume. It proves the fuel works in a large two-stroke engine, which is the part the skeptics kept doubting.
The reallocation plan
A reallocation plan would cover gallons that small-refinery exemptions carved out of prior-year RFS obligations. When EPA hands out exemptions without putting those gallons back, blending demand falls and RIN values soften, and producers eat it. Reallocating pushes the obligation back onto the remaining obligated parties.
For a jobber, that could firm up RIN prices and the blending economics behind your E10 and E15 spreads. Nothing is final until the numbers print.
Chicago futures up 29%
Chicago ethanol futures are up 29 percent this year, and the Iran war is part of the story. When crude runs up, ethanol looks cheap against the gasoline it blends into, and blenders reach for more of it to stretch the barrel. The discount is working as expected.
The flip side is real. If crude eases off and the war premium comes out, that 29 percent advantage could shrink fast and the blend math goes the other way. Watch your rack spreads, not the futures headline.
Biodiesel and the back end
A fresh biodiesel market report ran through trends and corporate strategy without moving any number a hauler cares about today, so file it. On the plant side, one ethanol producer agreed to buy a biological wastewater treatment system after a pilot, a small operating-cost item that says these plants are still spending to run leaner.
What to watch
Whether EPA actually writes marine fuel into RFS eligibility, and on what timeline, because that is the demand channel that could matter beyond a single ship. Watch the reallocation numbers when they print, for the RIN direction. And watch crude: if the Iran premium holds, ethanol stays the cheap blend component, and if it fades, that edge could narrow.
