Toast launches Toast Fuel, a single POS for pumps and c-store registers

Toast, the restaurant point-of-sale company, launched Toast Fuel, a system that runs the pumps and the in-store registers on one platform. The pitch to convenience operators is one system for the forecourt and the counter instead of a fuel controller and a foodservice register that don't share data.

The move fits where c-store money actually comes from. Fuel is a thin-margin traffic driver; the food and coffee inside carry the store. Toast built its business on restaurant kitchens and ordering, so a c-store product that treats the deli and the roller grill as the profit center, with fuel as the thing that gets people in the door, plays to what the company already does.

The open question is the fuel side. Pay-at-pump brings card-network rules, EMV at the dispenser, age verification, and fuel-tax handling that a restaurant POS has never had to touch. Established forecourt vendors like Gilbarco and Verifone have spent years on that plumbing. Toast has to match it or operators will keep a separate pump controller anyway, which kills the one-system pitch. Loyalty is the other piece worth watching. Tying a fuel discount to in-store spend is standard now, and a combined POS should make that cleaner if the integration holds.

Yanbu loadings

Saudi Arabia restarted crude loadings at its Red Sea port of Yanbu after the East-West pipeline came back into partial service, per Reuters vessel-tracking data. The Kingdom shut the onshore line for two weeks following the September 10 drone strikes on its pumping stations. The pipeline carries crude across the country to bypass the Strait of Hormuz, and full flows of about 4 million barrels a day could take weeks to return, according to the trade sources cited.

A US jobber won't feel this at the register today. It feeds the crude number that sets your rack price. The two-week outage tightened the supply picture; loadings resuming eases it some. If the pipeline reaches full capacity without another strike, crude could soften and pump costs with it.

What to watch

Whether Toast publishes pricing and a real integration with dispenser hardware, or whether Toast Fuel turns out to be a counter product with fuel bolted on. On crude, watch how fast Yanbu ramps back toward that 4 million bpd and whether the pumping stations draw another attack. Both move slowly. Neither is settled this week.
