Russian diesel license faces October 18 test
Trump is keeping US firepower out of Saudi Arabia's war with the Houthis and letting the Russian diesel license run to an October 18 test, and both calls appear aimed at holding pump prices down before November 3. For jobbers and haulers that is the supply story this week. Easier diesel and gasoline at the rack would help margins, but it rests on two foreign fights Washington does not fully control.
The Dhahran strike
The Houthis hit Aramco's Dhahran headquarters Tuesday night and shut Riyadh's main airport. Since September the US has stayed out as long as the Houthis hit only Saudi targets, and that has held. Dhahran runs Aramco, so trouble there could tighten crude and lift US prices. The strikes have stayed on Saudi ground so far, which keeps US forces on the sidelines and keeps the crude risk premium from building.
The Russian diesel license
October 18 is the first deadline on the license that keeps Russian diesel moving. Those barrels loosen global diesel supply, and looser supply is what feeds the lower rack prices American operators would see. If the license holds, diesel could stay easier into November. If it lapses, the spread could widen and haulers would feel it first.
Warrenton goes Phillips 66
Warrenton Oil is rebranding 18 FastLane forecourts with new interior and exterior work after moving those sites from Shell to Phillips 66 fuel. For a jobber, a brand switch is about the supply terms and the card program. Phillips 66 has been working to grow its branded count, and picking up 18 sites in one transition is a solid add for that network. Warrenton is a regional operator making a deliberate bet on the P66 economics over what Shell was offering.
Simon Xpress build-out
Convenience Store News ran a photo gallery on Simon Xpress and its store design, with the layout and foodservice built around the inside-the-box experience rather than the dispenser. Operators chasing foodservice dollars could find a few ideas worth copying in the fixtures and flow.
What to watch
The October 18 diesel license deadline is the near-term mover for rack diesel. Watch whether the Houthis keep their strikes on Saudi targets only, because the day that changes is the day the US sideline position could shift and the crude premium with it. And watch how fast Warrenton flips branded volume through the new P66 supply once the signage is up.
