Diesel hits record $6.53 a gallon as fuel surcharges climb for carriers

Diesel is $6.53 a gallon, the record AAA reported Tuesday. A year ago in September it was $3.74. Carriers pay that at the pump, and fuel surcharges across the country reset off it.

Surcharges

Fuel surcharges track the national diesel average, so a base near $6.53 pushes the per-mile add-on higher for anyone moving freight. Shippers pay it, carriers pass it, and the gap between contract rates and real fuel cost is where thin-margin haulers get squeezed when the average keeps climbing. A column out this week said there is no relief in sight as prices hold at records, and nothing in the data argues with that yet.

JPMorgan is leaning into diesel anyway, doubling down even as record prices test inflation. Read that as a call that the tightness holds for now, not a promise it will.

Export curbs

A report says the White House option of curbing US diesel exports could pull domestic prices down at first, then lift gasoline later. For haulers that is a real trade. Cheaper diesel in the near term helps the freight side; a gasoline bump later hits c-store fuel margins and the retail traffic that comes with cheap gas. If the curbs come, watch which way the crack moves before you cheer.

Buses and farms

Diesel powers more than 87 percent of the buses that carry about 23.5 million kids to school, per the Engine Technology Forum. Some districts have consolidated routes and cut daily trips to keep the buses running. Triad farmers are eating the same cost as fall harvest starts, when fuel demand for equipment is at its highest. Neither group can hedge the way a carrier can, and both are buying at the same rack you are.

The politics

The record has turned political. The Washington Post says the price is hitting Trump's own voters and exposing rifts. Marjorie Taylor Greene said the pain is making EVs look more appealing. There is also an opinion piece warning that a proposed diesel ban could backfire on American drivers. None of this moves the rack tomorrow, but a diesel ban debate in Washington is worth tracking for anyone who runs a diesel fleet.

What to watch

Whether the administration actually moves on export curbs, and how fast that shows up at the rack. Whether the national average eases off $6.53 or grinds higher into harvest and winter distillate demand. And whether shippers start pushing back on surcharge formulas if the base stays this high.
