Private equity buys two more independent propane dealers in the Ozarks and mid-South

Firmament-backed Matador Gas bought Action Propane and Ozark Mountain Propane, adding two more independents to a platform that is clearly on a buying run. Same day, Headwaters Holdings said it brought Arkansas Gas into its fold. If you run a family propane book in the Ozarks or the mid-South, the buyer pool just got another well-capitalized name in it.

The roll-up

Firmament is the capital behind Matador, and the Action plus Ozark Mountain deals fit a pattern jobbers have watched for a decade. A PE sponsor backs a platform, the platform stitches together regional independents, and route density plus shared supply contracts do the math. Arkansas Gas going to Headwaters is the same trade run by a different sponsor.

For an operator holding a single-county delivery book, this is the demand side of your own exit. More buyers with dry powder means better multiples if you sell and tougher wintertime price competition if you stay. Neither deal disclosed a price, so the read on where multiples are right now is still guesswork.

Grid costs

LP Gas Magazine put out its Propane Market Metrics piece on the costs of grid instability, tying propane demand to how shaky the power grid gets. The pitch to dealers is straightforward. Every rolling blackout and every winter-storm outage is a standby-generator sale and a fill-up, and the backup-power angle is one of the few growth stories in a heating fuel that is otherwise fighting electrification. Worth reading if you sell into generator accounts.

Safety

Two propane stories this week are the kind that put the fuel on the local news for the wrong reasons. In Normanna Township, Minnesota, a neighbor heard several propane tanks explode around 1:52 p.m. Sunday, and fire crews working the blaze found 57-year-old Scott Alan Larson dead. The St. Louis County Sheriff and the State Fire Marshal are investigating.

In Cherokee County, South Carolina, deputies arrested a man after his mother called 911 late Monday to report he had rigged a propane tank bomb on a timer inside a camper. The Spartanburg County Bomb Team found two open tanks connected to a cooking hot plate and disabled it. Deputies evacuated a nearby RV park while they worked.

What to watch

Whether Matador and Headwaters keep buying through the fall, and at what multiples once one of these deals actually prints a number. Watch heating-oil and propane inventories as the first cold snaps hit, and watch whether the generator-demand story holds up if the grid behaves this winter.
