California propane family sues Phillips 66 for fraud over its tanks and customer book
Stan Teaderman and his grandson Dustin Kaiser are suing Phillips 66 and several other energy entities for fraud, concealment, breach of contract and other claims, alleging the petroleum giant cut their 80-year-old family business out of the money. Allied Fuel Services has run propane and refined-fuel deliveries across Napa and Sonoma counties for about 80 years. For most of that history, propane was the core product.
The fight is over the physical assets of a propane operation: the delivery trucks and storage tanks, along with the customer accounts that come with them. Those assets are most of what a delivery book is worth, and when a jobber claims a supplier walked off with the value tied up in them, independent operators should watch this.
We only have the family's side so far. The complaint lists fraud and concealment alongside the breach claim, which tells you Allied is accusing Phillips 66 of hiding something material. That is a heavier charge than a simple failure to pay. How a court treats it could matter to any small marketer who signs supply or branding deals with a major and assumes the paper protects them.
The cylinder ban ruling
A court struck down California's ban on disposable one-pound propane cylinders, according to LP Gas Magazine. For anyone selling the little green camping bottles, or stocking them on a c-store shelf in California, the rule that was going to force a switch to refillable cylinders is off the table for now.
The practical read is simple. Retailers who had started planning around a refillable-only future can keep moving disposables while this plays out. Whether the state appeals or rewrites the rule is the open question.
