Heating oil reserves tapped with Connecticut supply as retail prices run more than double last year

Andy Will, Chief Editor · Sunday, October 25, 2026

Home heating oil reserves are being drawn down heading into winter, and some of that supply is coming out of Connecticut, according to CT Insider. For jobbers in the Northeast, a reserve draw this early says physical barrels are tight before the cold even sets in. Watch your allocation and your resupply lead times.

A reserve exists to cover a gap. Tapping it now, in October, means somebody decided the market needed the barrels more than the storage tank did. That is worth a call to your supplier this week to confirm where you stand on contract volume.

The forecast miss

FastDragon put out a propane delivery software buyer's guide built around one real example, and the number in it should land with any dealer running a degree-day model. A farmhouse near Traverse City, Michigan, came through the January 2026 cold and burned 18.4 gallons more than its forecast called for.

That is a K-factor problem, and the guide works through the fix. When your usage math drifts, you either roll a truck early on a false alarm or you leave a customer short in a cold snap. Neither one is free.

The guide also runs the dollars on tank rent, run-out leak checks, and budget and price plans, and it prices in Michigan's 4 percent tax so the worked example reflects what a dealer there actually collects. The useful part is matching the system to the size of your operation rather than buying more software than your route book needs.

Prices more than double

Retail heating oil is running more than double last year's level, per reporting from BBC and AOL, including complaints from Teesdale residents. Both of those are UK stories, so the retail prices do not set what a US customer pays.

They matter here only as a read on winter heating demand across the Atlantic, which can pull on the same distillate pool US refiners and importers draw from. A European market paying up for heating fuel is one more bidder for barrels, and that can show up in US distillate pricing if the cold runs deep on both sides. For now it is context, not a direct cost to your customers.

What to watch

Whether the reserve draw is a one-time move or the start of steady releases through the winter, and how much more Connecticut supply comes out. If the draw continues, spot heating oil could firm for Northeast dealers buying in the cash market.

Watch distillate inventories in the next EIA report, and watch whether the European price strength pulls US exports and tightens domestic supply further.
